He is a professor of archaeology and head of the Department of Archaeology and Museology at Masaryk University in Brno. He specializes in medieval archaeology, archaeological methods and computer support in archaeology. He publishes in international journals (e.g. Journal of Archaeological Science, Journal of World Prehistory, Medieval Archaeology, Praehistorische Zeitschrift, Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences) and publishing houses (e.g. Brill/Leiden-Boston, Habelt/Bonn, BAR Publishing/Oxford). He studied archaeology at universities in Brno, Bamberg and Vienna. He was a visiting professor at the University of Bamberg and a fellowship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Frankfurt am Main, Göttingen). He is the principal investigator of many national and international research projects and the holder of a number of awards (e.g. “Česká hlava 2023”, Cena Inovace award).
