The Population of Bohemia Underwent a Dietary Transformation in the Early Middle Ages
New anthropological and archaeological analyses from Stará Boleslav reveal a significant shift in the diet of the inhabitants of Bohemia during the Early Middle Ages. While millet, a staple of the early Slavs’ diet, had nearly disappeared from urban centers by the mid-11th century, the importance of other crops and animal proteins grew. Stará Boleslav played a special role as an emerging ecclesiastical center, where dietary changes were reflected, among other things, in higher consumption of freshwater fish.
